As we enter our 14th year, we'd like to share with you some of the extraordinary achievements that have taken place at The Children's Charities Foundation over the past 13 years. These achievements would not be possible without the generosity and support of all of you who believe so strongly in our mission of providing funding for non-profit organizations that support children by strengthening their health and welfare, supporting strong and cohesive families, and assisting educational and recreational programs in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. These funds are essential to maintain and support public and private programs and services for children in need. It is our hope that after reading about our accomplishments, you will join our team again this year through your support of one of our three major fundraising events:
The Children’s Charities Foundation raises most of its funds through our three major fundraising events: the “BB&T Classic”, a men’s college basketball tournament featuring the University of Maryland Terrapins, the George Washington University Colonials, the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy and the Virginia Tech Hokies, which will be held, starting at 5:00 PM, at the Verizon Center on Sunday, December 7, 2008; "The BasketBall" Gala which will be held at the Hilton Washington on Friday, December 5, 2008; and/or The Children’s Charities Foundation’s Golf Classic, presented by BB&T Wealth Management which will be held at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm on Monday, May 18, 2009.
First, our announcement of the 2008 “Stars for Children” award recipients:
Phil Hochberg, who has served as Vice Chairman of the CCF since its inception in 1994 and is the voice of the BB&T Classic. Phil has tirelessly worked over the years to help achieve these successes.
Al Lord, Vice Chairman and CEO of SallieMae, the student loan industry leader, described the Washington Post as a “determined, no-nonsense executive,” who is, at the same time, dedicated to education-related charitable causes and has served on the Board of Directors of the CCF since 2000.
Michael Sanders, a national legal authority on non-profit tax issues and counsel to the Foundation since 1998.
Gary Williams, Coach of the University of Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team since 1989 and who has served on our Advisory Board since our inception in 1994 is a foundation stone of the CCF.
Through the generosity and support of many, to date, we've raised and distributed $7 million. The following charities received grants from us in 2007:
As mentioned above, this year's black-tie Gala will be held on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Hilton Washington, 1919 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. This event, attended by representatives of the tournament teams, top sports figures and prominent business, community and national political figures, is one of Washington’s most enjoyable evenings. We have an exciting and fun-filled evening planned with entertainment provided by The Spinners, followed by, and back by popular demand, the Legendary Funk Brothers. We hope we can look forward to your support.
For the Gala, we are offering three table sponsorship opportunities:
